Important Travel Considerations
1. Road Conditions & Timing
Best Time: The road to Zanskar via Kargil is only open from June to September/October. Travel is highly dependent on weather and snow clearance on Pensi La Pass.
The Drives: Days 3, 6, and even Day 2 are very long and strenuous due to the extremely rugged and challenging roads. Expect significant travel time and fatigue.
Alternative Route (Shinku La): Some modern packages may use the newer road via the Shinku La Pass (connecting Padum to Manali/Darcha) which can reduce the drive time from Himachal Pradesh, but the standard package still uses the Kargil route for a Leh-to-Leh circuit.
2. Acclimatization & Safety
Day 1 Rest: This is non-negotiable. You must rest in Leh before starting this high-altitude journey to Zanskar.
Padum Altitude: Padum is at a similar high altitude to Leh (around 12,000 text{ feet}).
3. Accommodation
Leh: Hotels/Guesthouses.
Kargil: Hotels/Guesthouses (usually comfortable).
Padum/Rangdum: Accommodation is mostly basic but clean guesthouses, homestays, or simple tented camps. Do not expect luxury resorts.
This itinerary is very packed due to the limited time and vast distances. A slower, more comfortable Zanskar trip often takes 8 to 10 days.
