This itinerary includes an overnight stop on the Manali-Leh highway and dedicates three nights to exploring the key regions of Ladakh (Nubra Valley and Pangong Lake).
Important Safety & Logistics Tips
1. Altitude Sickness (AMS)
This is the most critical factor for this route. Leh is at 11,000 text{ feet}, and you'll cross passes over 17,000 text{ feet}.
Ascend Gradually: The overnight stop in Jispa/Keylong (Day 1) is essential, as it's at a much lower altitude than Sarchu, which is often used but can be risky.
Rest in Leh: Day 3 must be a mandatory rest/acclimatization day. Avoid strenuous activity.
Hydrate: Drink at least 3-4 liters of water daily. Avoid alcohol and smoking entirely.
Medication: Consult your doctor about taking Diamox (Acetazolamide) as a prophylactic for AMS.
2. Roads and Permits
Best Time: The road is open from late May/early June to mid-October. The best time is typically June to September.
Permits: You will need an Inner Line Permit (ILP) to visit Nubra Valley, Pangong, etc. This must be obtained online or through a local agent/hotel in Leh.
Rohtang Pass: The Atal Tunnel now bypasses Rohtang Pass, making the initial drive faster and easier.
3. Accommodation
Manali/Leh: Hotels/Guesthouses.
Jispa/Keylong/Nubra/Pangong: Camps or Guesthouses. Camps at Pangong and Hunder offer the best experience but can be based .
